Pop Up Art

There seems to be a new trend developing in the art world in Trinidad.  I went to two “Pop Up” or one-off art exhibitions last week – one entitled New Faces at the Hilton Hotel foyer, and the other featuring international celebrity brothers Geoffrey and Boscoe Holder at 101 Art Gallery on Woodford Street, Port of Spain.

New Faces was hosted by Horizons Art Gallery and featured fifteen up and coming young artists with a variety of media and styles.  I was very impressed with the talent demonstrated.  The youngest artist was only thirteen years old, yet gave a surprisingly mature rendering of her art.  I particularly loved the beautiful and realistic portraits by Jacy O’Brien.   I look forward to seeing more of these extraordinary artists in the future.

Also look out for more of these exciting pop up art shows to be held at the Hilton every month.

Actor/dancer/artist Geoffrey Holder and his brother, Boscoe, both sadly deceased, had similar painting themes and styles.  The few large paintings on display mainly portrayed dramatic, stylised portraits.  I was also fascinated browsing through the book on Geoffrey’s life with his dancer wife, Carmen.  It recalled to me how much I enjoyed the movie about their life together, and how thrilled I was that Geoffrey was in attendance for questions at that time.

This exhibition also featured exquisite hand blown glass sculptures by Cuban artist, Eduardo Izquierdo Calzado
