Bes’ Hotel on d’ Island

Blue Waters Inn bungalow

It may not be the biggest or the fanciest or the one with the most activities, but it ticks all my boxes. I am talking about the delightful Blue Waters Inn at Speyside, Tobago.

I had stayed at this hotel three years ago when they were in the process of recovering from the years of pandemic closure. So my expectations were low when a group of my friends decided to spend a couple of days there recently. Living on the the south of the island means that we have to travel north to feel that we have ‘got away’ from our normal habitat. Even if that means less than an hour and a half’s leisurely drive to the sleepy village of Speyside.

Jemma's Treehouse Restaurant

The coastal drive is very scenic so that you feel that is part of the holiday. We stopped for lunch at the popular Jemma’s Treehouse Restaurant for delicious creole food, presented in several serving dishes. Their breadfruit pie is the best! It’s a pity that the sargassum has obliterated the beach there.

The seaweed and the water shortages were a concern for us, but neither spoiled our trip. Here are my ticked boxes (not in any particular order):

  • The hotel is nestled in lovely, sloping grounds and is right on a sandy beach
  • The view of Little Tobago and Goat islands is breath-taking
  • Rooms are modern, clean and very comfortable, with all the amenities you would expect from a top class hotel
  • All the rooms look onto the beach
  • The infinity pool and jacuzzi have a lovely view of the ocean
  • Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful
  • The food in the restaurant is the best on the island, in my opinion; also
gluten-free dishes were clearly marked on the menu
the kitchen staff are trained to serve Celiacs, and other dietary needs
their buffet breakfast is amazing, and they even cooked gluten-free pancakes for me
they plan to provide separate menus for gluten-intolerants, vegetarians and vegans
their coffee is specially blended for the hotel and is delicious
  • They were flexible about check-in times, at no extra cost
  • They have a games room and a tennis/pickleball court
  • You can get boat/snorkeling tours right from the jetty alongside the hotel

There is even wildlife literally on your door step.

Bungalow

We happened to be at the Blue Waters Inn at the same time as death divers taking part in the Døds competition in nearby Charlotteville. That added a ‘spice’ to the experience. My group is already planning a longer return visit to this hotel later this year.
