Tulips of Flevoland

You would have heard of the tulips of Amsterdam, but it’s Flevoland that you need to visit to experience some of the largest open tulip fields in the Netherlands. I was there in late April to early May in 2023 and the sight of these colourful blooms lining the roads was just breath-taking. The pictures do not do them justice. It’s like trying to describe how viewing the brilliant yellow or dramatic pinks of our local Poui trees seem to vibrate with your soul. The sight has a calming effect on you.

So here I will try to bring you a feel of these beautiful flowers.

Apparently, these plants are grown to harvest the bulbs, not the flowers. When the fields are at their prime, the workers go through and pick out the ‘stray’ coloured tulips (from last year’s crop probably) so that the harvest is of a consistent colour. Then they cut them all down and discard the flowers! Seems such a waste.

The tulips were late blooming this year because of a cold patch in early Spring. When a field was ready to harvest , it just looked like a huge splash of colour. You did not notice individual blooms.
