Adventure and Nature in Tobago

Birds Feeding
Adventure Farm sign

I love adventure and discovering new treasures to visit in T&T. So I jumped at the opportunity to visit The Adventure Farm and Nature Reserve near Arnos Vale in Tobago, with friends. It’s best to call first to find out bird feeding times as that is quite a spectacle. It’s also a good idea to avoid rainy days as the nature walk would be slippery. The property is called Adventure Farm because it is located in the area called Adventure.

hummingbirds feeding

We started off by witnessing several different species of hummingbirds flitting around the hanging feeders. There were also larger feeders attracting many other types of birds such as motmots, bananaquits, woodpeckers, tropical mockingbirds, tanagers and others. It was a most mesmerising experience. The owner, Ian McKay, pointed out the different species and answered our many questions.

Ian then gave us a guided tour of the two delightful and fully equipped cottages for rent by visitors, before pointing out the path to access the gardens.

Trees
Pond with guide dog

We walked down the path with two dogs as our guides. There were a few signs pointing out the right way but we did get a little lost by going off track to look at the interesting trees and lush vegetation all around. We eventually came to a pond with benches to relax and enjoy the serenity of the place.

ice cream

Soon we had circled the grounds and so ambled back up the driveway to end our tour. There are juices and ice cream available to refresh yourselves as well as chutneys to purchase. We were happy to support this worthwhile eco-venture. A lovely way to spend an afternoon. I am finding that there is a lot to do in Tobago!
