As far as I am concerned, MovieTowne is the best thing to happen to Trinidad in the last decade or more. It’s the one place in Port of Spain that I feel perfectly safe to drive alone as a single woman to shop, meet friends, go to the movies, etc. I especially love that there are free premium acts at the Fiesta Plaza on Wednesday and Saturday evenings. The ambiance is wonderful in the liming/dining area in the middle of the complex, under the stars, surrounded by Spanish/Caribbean architecture housing a variety of restaurants and bars.
Recently, I was part of a girls lime to see the Mamma Mia! Sequel movie. This is a lovely, feel-good show featuring quite a few Abba songs that I hadn’t heard before. It was just perfect to be able to wander into the plaza afterwards and find an outdoor table for the seven of us, order drinks and cutters, and at 8:30pm precisely, for a top local band to entertain us for an hour.
This time the show featured Traffik, a nineties rock band that has been rejuvenated with its own new music. Of course they covered many old favourites, including mellow music like ‘I Am … I Said’ by Neil Diamond, of whom I am a great fan (crazy about his music, actually) plus energetic soca and reggae hits to get the audience literally jumping.
Usually the sound system is excellent but on this occasion, I did find that the singers were a bit muffled and drowned out by the musicians. Still, it was a great performance and a most pleasant way to spend a Saturday night with good company and entertainment. Thank you, MovieTowne!
